The Pill must be taken daily to prevent pregnancy and it can be very consqequencial if you miss one and can be severe if you miss 3 and continue to have unprotected sex. The Patch that is placed on a certain area of the body once a week this will stay on while swimming or showering, it must be placed on a pert of the body that has minimal hair coverage. The IUD is place in the uterus by a health care provider that can be placed in for 5-10 years, however this can be extremely painful for some women to put in or remove and for thew first couple of months there will be some heavy bleeding and some severe cramping. Only women who have had a child can use this type of birth control. The Emergency Contraception that is taken after unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy, this must be taken within 5 days after sex and better if within the first 3. The shot a shot that is given every one to three months to prevent pregnancy this why you can choose when you want to reciev your period, however there may be be some spotting.
STI's
FCA’s for this assignment is to include the following for each of the STI’s: 1) What is it? 2) How do you get it? 3) What are the symptoms? 4) How can you know for sure? 5)How is it treated? 6) What can happen if you don’t take care of it?
Chlamydia: Chlamydia is an infection cause by bacteria, and you get it by sexual contact vagianl anal or oral, with someone who has chlamydia. Women don't tend to have symptoms, but can have pelvic pain, vaginal discharge, bleeding after intercourse. Men may have no symptoms, painful peeing, discharge from the penis. You can know for sure by a urine sample, or discharge sample sent to a lab. It is treated by antibiotics. If you don't take care of it, you can get sever infections of reproductive organs, infertility, can pass from mom to baby in childbirth, can spread infection to other sex partners.
Gonorrhea: Gonorrhea is an infection caused by bacteria, and you can get it by sexual contact with someone who has gonorrhea. Womens symptoms are the same as chlamydia including blood/pus from anus and sore throat. Men have the same as women. It is treated with antibiotics, and if you dont take care of it properly, it can cause PID or infertility. It can pass from mom to baby in birth, heart trouble skin issues and or arthritis. It can also spread to other sex partners.
Syphilis: Syphilis is an infection caused by bacteria and is treated with antibiotics, and possible hospitalization. The symptoms are painless sores on mouth, penis, vagina anus or elsewhere. You know for sure if you get a medical exam of the sores, and a blood test. If you dont take care of it, you get new sores rash fever hair loss body aches sore throat swollen glands.
At a stage three it does damage to the heart and brain, can cause PID, sever damage to fetus, or death. And can cause death in the person.
HIV/AIDS: Virus that damages the bodys immune system. You get it by sexual contact with someone who has it, via body fluids. The symptoms are unexplained fever, chills, drenching, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, constant diarrhea, dry cough shortness of breath, constant fatigue, unexplained swollen glands, pink purple flat or raised blotches on or under skin, and persistent white spots in the mouth. You know for sure by a blood test or a sure test. It is treated by a mixture of medicines to try to fight the spread of infection and any illnesses.
If you dont take care of it, you develop a life threatening illness, mother can pass to child, and spread to sex/needle sharing partners.
Genital Herpes: This is an infection caused by the herpes simplex virus, and once infected with it, it stays in the body. Medication or cream may speed up healing of sores, or it may prevent future outbreaks. You get it by sexual contact, skin to skin contact, with someone who has it. Virus can be passed even if no sores are present. You get painful blisters that break into open sores, and they dry up and disappear within 5-21 days, and swollen glands. You know for sure if you get medical exams of the blisters, or blood test. If you dont take care of it, the sores will come and go normally with stress and/or illnesses. Can spread virus to sex partners even when sores not present, mother can pass to child in birth, and serious death or illness of child.
Genital Warts: An infection caused by Human Papilloma Virus, and once infected the virus stays in body; no known cure warts may be burned off frozen cut or removed with minor surgery. You get it by sexual or skin to skin contact with someone who has HPV. The virus can be passed without the warts visible. The symptoms include small painless cauliflower like bump that grows in and around the genital area. You might have a slight itching or irritation. You know for sure by a medical exam of the bumps, or a PAP test in women. If you dont take care of it, the warts grow larger, become harder to remove, or spread to new areas. HPV is leading cause of cervical cancer in women. It can be passed from mother to child in birth, and can spread the virus to other sex partners.
Pubic Lice "crabs": Crabs is a parasite that lives in and around your genitals. You get it by sexual contact or simply sharing the bed or clothes with someone effected with it. You will have severe itching, see lice/eggs in the pubes, small dots of blood in underwear. You can know for sure if you get a visual exam of the area. Crabs is treated by using special shampoo/lotion, wash all bedding/clothes, have others checked. If you don't take care of it, they may lead to a bacteria infection, may spread to other people, and the symptoms may get worse.
Tobacco
Other types of methods to quit
There are many different ways that a person can quit using tobacco. Some are basic therapies or treatments, while others are pills or pouches that are on the market but have not been approved or reviewed by the FDA.
The basic therapies and such include:
- Atropine and scopolamine combination therapy: This therapy is described as " Some smoking cessation clinics offer a program using shots of the anticholinergic drugs atropine and scopolamine to help reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms. These drugs are more commonly prescribed for other reasons, such as digestive system problems, motion sickness, or Parkinson's disease. The treatment usually involves shots given in the clinic on one day, followed by a few weeks of pills and wearing patches behind the ear. It may include other drugs to help with side effects as well. Some clinics claim high success rates, but there is no published scientific research to back up these claims. Both atropine and scopolamine are FDA approved for other uses, but they have not been formally studied or approved for help in quitting smoking. Before considering such a program, you may want to ask the clinic about long-term success rates (up to a year). Because these medicines are directed only at the physical aspect of quitting, you may also want to ask if the program includes counseling or other methods aimed at the psychological aspects of quitting." (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#other) People may choose this type because they think that one shot and a couple of pills is quicker than several visits to a therapist for hypnosis or acupuncture.
- Hypnosis: This is describe as "an artificially induced trance state resembling sleep, characterized by heightened susceptibility to suggestion." (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/hypnosis) A person trying to quit may find this helpful because when they are in the trance like state they are more susceptible to opinion and if someone on the outside is telling them to quit, then they are more likely to listen .
- Acupuncture: The dictionary definition for this type of therapy is "a Chinese medical practice or procedure that treats illness or provides local anesthesia by the insertion of needles at specified sites of the body." (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=2&q=acupuncture) Also, on the American Cancer Society website it states that "but there is little evidence to support its effectiveness. Acupuncture, when it is done, is typically done on the ears on particular ear sites. Although there is a very weak suggestion that acupuncture might lower the desire for smoking, there still is no solid evidence that it is truly effective as a smoking cessation tool" (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#other)
- Laser Therapy/ Cold laser therapy: The American Cancer society describes this as "Cold lasers are sometimes used for acupuncture, with laser beams to stimulate the body's acupoints rather than needles. The treatment is supposed to relax the smoker and release endorphins (naturally-occurring pain relief substances) in the body to simulate the effects of nicotine in the brain, or balance the body's energy to relieve the addiction. Despite claims of success by some cold laser therapy providers, there is no scientific evidence that shows this is an effective method of helping people stop smoking" (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#other) The person trying to quit may prefer this over acupuncture because of a needle issue and a laser sounds better than hypnosis and safer than acupuncture. Even though there is not a high success rate there are those cases that do work and people may be a lot comfortable with the idea of lasers and not needles.
- Filters: "reduce tar and nicotine in cigarettes are generally not effective since studies show that smokers who use filters actually tend to smoke more." (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#other) So, don't choose this one because it can cause more severe long and short term effects than the other options.
- Smoking deterrents: "such as over-the-counter products that change the taste of tobacco, "stop smoking diets" that curb nicotine cravings, and combinations of vitamins have little scientific evidence to support their claims." (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#other) Some people may prefer this type because it is a basic thing that can be picked up at the local pharmacy. There are also so many commercials for things like these, like patches and gum, and people believe what is said and they enjoy the convenience.
- Tobacco lozenges and pouches: " Lozenges containing tobacco, (Ariva, Interval) and small, tobacco-containing pouches (Revel, Exalt) are being marketed as alternative ways for smokers to get nicotine in places where smoking is not permitted, rather than as quit smoking aids. The FDA has ruled that these are types of smokeless tobacco, not smoking cessation aids; therefore, the FDA does not have authority over them. There is no evidence that these products can help a person quit smoking" (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#other) People may enjoy these because of their simplicity and convinience, all you have to do is pop one in your mouth like a cough drop and thats it. Also, these can be taken in places where smoking in not allowed.
- Nicotine lollipops and lip balms: "some pharmacies made a product called a "nicotine lollipop". These lollipops often contained a product called nicotine salicylate with a sugar sweetener. Nicotine salicylate is not approved for pharmacy use by the FDA. The FDA has warned several pharmacies to stop selling nicotine lollipops and lip balm on the Internet, calling the products "illegal." The FDA also said "the candy-like products present a risk of accidental use by children." (http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_10_13X_Guide_for_Quitting_Smoking.asp#other) People may choose these because of their simplicity, they can be used anywhere where smoking is illegal. But families with small children should either not buy them and look for another type, or keep them out of reach where there is no chance that a child can get one.
Shared Projects from Peers
Vitamin Projects:
Joe: 9/13/07Vitamin CVitamin C is essential for our bodies. It is a vitamin that strenghtens our immune system as well by strenghting blood vessels. It also helps build collagen in our body which is needed for tissue repair. So essintially vitmain C plays a major role in the production of antibodies. Micah: My vitamin is vitamin C (ascorbic acid). Without Vitamin c your body cannot stay healthy. Its a vital vitamin because it is healthy for your blood system and nervous system; it also strengthens blood vessels. One key thing that vitamin c does is it helps the collagen tissue which helps against infection and disease. Last but not least, vitamin c helps your body if it is being over worked. For example, if your have a cold or the flu, vitamin c aids the body and strengthens your white blood cells. Some other things that the vitamin does is it can prevent allergies, can improve male fertility, may reduce cholesterol, etc. This vitamin can be found in grapefruit, lemons mango's, tomatoes, strawberries, orange juice, etc. There are many ways to get your share of this vitamin, some being, tablets, liquid formula, a shot from your doctor, your just simply eating some of the key foods that make your body healthy. Some cautions that you should be aware of before taking in vitamin c is if you have: gout, kidney stones, sickle-cell, anemia, and iron storage disease. Some side effects may be, flushed face, headache, mild diarrhea, etc. If your body takes in aspirin the vitamin c will not work as strong. Some ways that you can verify that you have overdosed is: if your face gets flushed, headache, increase in urination, diarrhea, etc.
Sarah E: The Wonder of Vitamin CVitamin C is perhaps one of the most well-known vitamins in our diets. When you visit the super market you will find many products with "a full serving of vitamin C". People use Vitamin C tablets.Vitamin C is required for a healthy immune system, and can help prevent cancer, colds, cataracts, heart disease and aid in the healing of wounds. Vitamin C is also required in the synthesis of collagen in connective tissues. The ascorbic acid in Vitamin C is needed for healthy cell development, healthy gum tissues and is excellent for clearing up infection and preventing cholesterol problems. So Vitamin C is a useful and much need nutrient. What happens if the body is Vitamin C deficient? When devoid of Vitamin C, the gums will bleed, the body is weaker and bruises more easily. You can develop scurvy, the scourge of malnourished sailors. However Scurvy is easily treated with does of Vitamin C.The best dosages tend to be 60 mg per day or 200-300 mg in recent studies. While for pregnant and nursing women it is 75-95 mg.You can however overdose on this vitamin. The symptoms include gastrointestinal complaints, such a diarrhea. Now, if you do not wish to get your vitamin C, in pill form, there are many foods which contain it. Most if not all fruit contain Vitamin C while leafy green vegetables (such as Spinach) contain it as well. When taking the vitamin in pill form do not mix it with aspirin as it could cause stomach pain. Antidepressants and birth control pills can also react with it. It is best to get your vitamin see in the form of fruit or vegetable and snacks fortified with vitamin c (think of those delicious gummy snacks at the grocery store, they're loaded with a full daily value!)
Jen: Thiamine is a very important vitamin because it helps you metabolize your fat, however, it is water soluble, which means that it disintegrates in water. After it is in the body, the water in your body makes it disappear in some parts, but not completely because the nutrients in Thiamine store the vitamin in your muscle tissues. It helps keep your heart healthy along with your digestive system and your nervous system. However, its not able to be stored in the body, minus your muscle tissues, so you have to take in the vitamin frequently to remain healthy. The vitamin, Thiamine can be found in bananas, pork, spinach, breads, yeast, and many more.If you have a Thiamine deficiency meaning that you cant take in and keep Thiamine, or that you just don't eat the proper foods for it, it results in having no nutrition. Or, if you are an alcoholic, the alcohol takes away the nutrition that some of your foods, and can lead to death or wasting.

Joyce: Vitamin D also known as Cholecalcifero plays an enormous role in the development of bone growth, Vitamins D is used to absorb calcium and phosphorus from the body to create this bone. In a section from a website it states that Vitamin D can be found in different sources: “Great sources of this supplement include fortified milk, oily fish, liver, and eggs.”(http://www.vitamins-nutrition.org//vitamins-guide/vitamin-d-cholecalciferol.html) There are many benefits that Vitamin D can give to the body by helping prevent substance abusers, nutritional intake, and extended stress. Vitamin D can also help people that do not receive enough sunshine by giving them the needed nutrients, vegetarians that don’t receive enough Vitamin D, and patients that suffer from cystic fibrosis patients. Vitamin D can be found in many different sources, in a section from a website of health listed them: cod-liver oil, egg substitutes, halibut-liver oil, herring, mackerel, salmon, sardines, sunlight, tuna, and Vitamin-D-fortified milk. (http://www.vitamins-nutrition.org//vitamins-guide/vitamin-d-cholecalciferol.html) There are many different ways that Vitamin D can be taken or used, but the best way that it can be obtained is through its liquid state. Tablets for Vitamin D can also be taken to help get the needed amount. When taking Vitamin D you should be cautious and consult your doctor and from a statement from a health website it pronounced that:“Consult your doctor if you have:have planned pregnancy while taking vitamin D, epilepsy, heart or blood-vessel disease, kidney, liver or pancreatic disease, chronic diarrhea, intestinal problems, sarcoidosis and if you are over 55:higher potential for adverse reactions and side effects.”(http://www.vitamins-nutrition.org//vitamins-guide/vitamin-d-cholecalciferol.html)There are some symptoms of deficiency that could occur would be weakness in the muscles, bone pain tenderness, osteoporosis, arthritis, cancer and in children rickets.(http://www.vitamins-nutrition.org//vitamins-guide/vitamin-d-cholecalciferol.html) There are many different signs of an overdose of Vitamin D, in a segment of a health cite described these signs:“high blood pressure, Irregular heartbeat, nausea, weight loss, seizures, abdominal pain, appetite loss, mental-and physical-growth retardation, premature hardening of arteriesKidney damage.” (http://www.vitamins-nutrition.org//vitamins-guide/vitamin-d-cholecalciferol.html)There are many different side effects that are caused by Vitamin D but these are found to be the most important:The loss of appetite, dry mouth, nausea or vomiting, increased thirst, mental confusion, and headaches. If any of these systems should occur discuss with your doctor straight away.Vitamin D has different sorts of interactions such as:“Anticonvulsants: Vitamin efficacy may be reduced.Barbiturates: Vitamin efficacy may be reduced.Calcitonin: Calcitonin effect reduced when treating hypercalcemia.Calcium (high doses): Risk of hypercalcemia increased. Cholestyramine: Vitamin absorption reduced.Colestipol: Vitamin absorption reduced.Cortisone: Vitamin absorption reduced.Digitalis preparations: Heartbeat irregularities increased.Diuretics, thiazide: Hypercalcemia risk increased.Hydration: Vitamin efficacy may be reduced.Mineral oil: Absorption of vitamin D increased.Phosphorus- containing medicines: Risk increased of too much phosphorus in blood.Primidone : Vitamin efficacy may be reduced.Vitamin-D derivatives: Increased potential for toxicity due to additive effects.Alcohol: Depletes storage of vitamin D in liver”(http://www.vitamins-nutrition.org//vitamins-guide/vitamin-d-cholecalciferol.html)These are very important interactions that Vitamin D can cause and should be taken seriously and looked into every few months.
Charlene: Vitamin E is very beneficial to the body. Vitamin E has makes it so you have a healthy circulatory system. It helps prevent bloot clotting and decreases the wound healing process. Vitamin E also "decreases symptoms of premenstrual syndrom and certain types of breast disease". There have been studies that state, taking large amounts of vitamin E decreases the risk of atherosclerosis. Vitamin E is categorized in the fat tissues of our bodies. This can last from a few days to six months. This can be bad at times though, because if you get too much of it, it will get go to your liver and can cause serious health problems. Some Sources of Vitamin E are:Wheat germVegetable oil and margarineAvocadoWhole grain productsEgg yolkNutsLiverPeanut butterYou cant really overdose on a vitamin but too much of Vitamin E can casue nausea and digestive problems.
Zach: For the first project I had to research vitamin H and what it dose for the body. Vitamin H is received from certain intestinal bacteria, Vitamin H is also known as Biotin. This particular Vitamin is used for boosting metabolism. protects amino acids and set up for the building of protein. this particular virtaman is used for cell growth http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/vitamin-h-000342.htm (that was the one I presented in class and I revised it afterword. ) It is esential for normal growthand development. the benifits are the relive of mussle pain and depression. You can find Vitamin H in split peas, tuna, and walnuts. The best way to take Vitamin H is to take it in liquid for for bioavalibility. The vitamin can be altered if there is moister or heat added. VH can help with the fallowing, Hair loss, dermatitis, anemia, muscel pain, and last loss of appitite. if you drink alchol or tabacco with VH it will not be as succesful. http://www.vitamins-nutrition.org/vitamins-guide/vitamin-h-biotin.html
James: Vitamin K is a group of 2-methilo-naphthoquinone derivatives. There are three notable forms of vitamin K, K1 (phytonadione, phylloquinone, phytonactone), K2 (menaquinones), which can be formed by natural bacteria in the intestines, and K3 (menadione), the most active synthetic form of the preparations K3-K7. Vitamin K plays an important role in blood clotting and bone metabolism. High serum concentrations of undercarboxylated osteocalcin and low serum concentrations of vitamin K are associated with lower bone mineral density and increased risk of hip fracture. Vitamin K supplements may improve bone mass in postmenopausal women. Vitamin K prevents calcification of arteries and other soft tissue. Calcification of organs and other soft tissue is an adverse consequence of aging. Vitamin K may play a role in the regulation of blood sugar. The pancreas, which makes insulin, has the second highest amount of vitamin K in the body. Vitamin K's primary function is to regulate normal blood clotting due to its role in the synthesis of prothrombin. Vitamin K supplements improve bone health and reduce risk of bone fractures, particularly in postmenopausal women who are at risk for osteoporosis. Three vitamin-K dependent proteins have been isolated in bone. Higher vitamin K levels correspond to greater bone density, while low levels of vitamin K have been found in those with osteoporosis. In bones, vitamin K mediates the gamma-carboxylation of glutamyl residues on several bone proteins, notably osteocalcin. Osteocalcin is a protein synthesized by osteoblasts (bone forming cells). The mineral-binding capacity of osteocalcin requires vitamin K-dependent gamma-carboxylation of three glutamic acid residues. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for vitamin K is 80 mg per day for adult males and 65 mg per day for adult females, and 5 mg/day for the newborn infant. Rich sources of vitamin K include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, spinach and soybeans.Vitamin K deficiency is very rare and occurs when there is an inability to absorb the vitamin from the intestinal tract. Vitamin K deficiency can also occur after prolonged treatment with oral antibiotics. Vitamin K deficiency is often the result of impaired absorption rather than not getting enough in the diet. Prolonged use of antibiotics can also cause a low level of this vitamin because they destroy some of the bacteria in the gut that help to produce vitamin K. Newborns are at risk for vitamin K deficiency. This is because their digestive tracts contain no vitamin K-producing bacteria. Vitamin K deficiency in adults is rare. When it occurs, it is found in people with diseases that prevent the absorption of fat. These diseases include cystic fibrosis, celiac disease, and cholestasis. Symptoms of vitamin K deficiency include easy bruisability, epistaxis, gastrointestinal bleeding, menorrhagia and hematuria. There is no known toxicity associated with high doses of phylloquinone (vitamin K1), menaquinone (vitamin K2), or menadione (vitamin K3) and its derivatives. High intake of vitamin K is not recommended for individuals taking anticoagulant medications such as Warfarin (coumadin).
Fruit Projects:
Joe:Apples are a tradition fruite especially used in pies. However they have many benifical effects for our health such as; arthritis, gout, cleansing toxins in our body and are good for weight loss. Apples also have good sources of Copper, Iron, Magnesium, Vitamin C, and Vitamin A just to name a few. Some people believe that you should not eat apple seeds because of the cyanide in them is toxic. Some apples have wax covering them, therefore it is better to buy organicly grown apples or eat ones you grow yourself.
Micah: One fruit that is extremely healthy for you is pineapple. This fruit is generally used for blood disorder, gout, sciatica, digestive problems, inflammation, and weight loss. If you are looking for clacium, potassium, vitamin A, chlorine, sodium, vitamin C, phosphorus, sulfur, and bromelain. The way to test if a pineapple is ripe is if it has a golding brown color to the outside. Also a technique that i have found is if the tassles on the top pull out easily. If a pineapple is grown organically it is ok to eat it/grind it up. This part of the fruit is good for you because the rind is the main source of bromelain.
Sarah E:
Jen:Apples are traditionally used to make apple cider with. The apples that have fallen onto the ground from the trees are normally picked up, and press the juices out so that they run it through machinery. People also use apples for apple pie, apple cobbler...there are many apple-y things.Apples are good source of pectin, a fiber that can lower blood cholesterol and sugar levels. Fresh apples are also good sources of the vitamin C — protects your body's cells from damage. Vitamin C also helps form the connective tissue collagen, keeps your capillaries and blood vessels healthy, and aids in absorbing iron and folate. Some people say that you can eat the whole apple, however that is untrue. The seeds inside of the apple contain cyanide, [poison], and in large amounts could hurt of maybe kill you. Apples should be firm and not bruised. They should be strong and healthy. Apples are free of fat, sodium, and cholesterol. They contain a lot of Vitamin C, that helps in the prevention of cancer.

Health Benefits and Nutrients
Eating grains, especially whole grains, provides health benefits. People who eat whole grains as part of a healthy diet have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases. Grains provide many nutrients that are vital for the health and maintenance of our bodies.Health benefits
Consuming foods rich in fiber, such as whole grains reduces the risk of heart disease. Consuming foods rich in fiber, such as whole grains, as part of a healthy diet, may reduce constipation. Eating at least 3 ounce equivalents a day of whole grains may help with weight management. Eating grains fortified with folate before and during pregnancy helps prevent tube defects during fetal development. Grains are important sources of many nutrients, including dietary fiber, several B vitamins and minerals. Dietary fiber from whole grains helps reduce blood cholesterol levels and may lower risk of heart disease. Fiber is important for proper bowel function. It helps reduce constipation and diverticulosis. Fiber-containing foods such as whole grains help provide a feeling of fullness with fewer calories. Whole grains are good sources of dietary fiber; most refined grains contain little fiber. B vitamins are also essential for a healthy nervous system. Many refined grains are enriched with these B vitamins. Women of childbearing age who may become pregnant and those in the first trimester of pregnancy should consume adequate folate, including folic acid from fortified foods or supplements. This reduces the risk of tube defects, spina bifida, and anencephaly during fetal development. Iron is used to carry oxygen in the blood. Many teenage girls and women in their childbearing years have iron-deficiency anemia. They should eat foods high in heme-iron (meats) or eat other iron containing foods along with foods rich in vitamin C, which can improve absorption of non-heme iron. Whole and enriched refined grain products are major sources of non-heme iron in American diets.

Tips to help you eat whole grains
At Meals:
To eat more whole grains, substitute a whole-grain product for a refined product – such as eating whole-wheat bread instead of white bread or brown rice instead of white rice. It’s important to substitute the whole-grain product for the refined one, rather than adding the whole-grain product. For a change, try brown rice or whole-wheat pasta. Try brown rice stuffing in baked green peppers or tomatoes and whole-wheat macaroni in macaroni and cheese.
Use whole grains in mixed dishes, such as barley in vegetable soup or stews and bulgur wheat in casserole or stir-fries. Create a whole grain pilaf with a mixture of barley, wild rice, brown rice, broth and spices. For a special touch, stir in toasted nuts or chopped dried fruit.
Experiment by substituting whole wheat or oat flour for up to half of the flour in pancake, waffle, muffin or other flour-based recipes. They may need a bit more leavening. Use whole-grain bread or cracker crumbs in meatloaf. Try rolled oats or a crushed, unsweetened whole grain cereal as breading for baked chicken, fish, veal cutlets, or eggplant parmesan. Try an unsweetened, whole grain ready-to-eat cereal as croutons in salad or in place of crackers with soup. Freeze leftover cooked brown rice, bulgur, or barley. Heat and serve it later as a quick side dish.
As Snacks:
Snack on ready-to-eat, whole grain cereals such as toasted oat cereal. Add whole-grain flour or oatmeal when making cookies or other baked treats. Try a whole-grain snack chip, such as baked tortilla chips. Popcorn, a whole grain, can be a healthy snack with little or no added salt and butter.
What to Look for on the Food Label:
Choose foods that name one of the following whole-grain ingredients first on the label’s ingredient list:
“brown rice”
“bulgur”
“graham flour”
“oatmeal”
“whole-grain corn”
“whole oats”
“whole rye”
“whole wheat”
“wild rice”
Foods labeled with the words “multi-grain,” “stone-ground,” “100% wheat,” “cracked wheat,” “seven-grain,” or “bran” are usually not whole-grain products. Color is not an indication of a whole grain. Bread can be brown because of molasses or other added ingredients. Read the ingredient list to see if it is a whole grain. Read the food label’s ingredient list. Look for terms that indicate added sugars and oils that add extra calories. Choose foods with fewer added sugars, fats, or oils. Most sodium in the food supply comes from packaged foods. Similar packaged foods can vary widely in sodium content, including breads.
Whole Grain Tips for Children
Set a good example for children by eating whole grains with meals or as snacks. Let children select and help prepare a whole grain side dish. Teach older children to read the ingredient list on cereals or snack food packages and choose those with whole grains at the top of the list.

Pear Juice
1) describe what this fruit is traditionally used for, 2) good source for, 3) freshness test,4) important information, 5) general information, and what the 3 greatest amounts of vitamins are in that fruit.
Pear juice is traditionally used for bladder problems, constipation, toxin elimination, liver and prostate. It is a good source of phosphorus, Vitamins B-1 and 2, Pectin, Potassium, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and Folic acid. When you buy your pears, you want to look for pears that have a deep green color to them and possibly gold or even red. A good pear is slightly firm, yet not soft or mushy. When juicing, don't use a soft pear as it will clog your juicer, and you may want to dilute pear juice with either water or apple juice.

He told us that the reason that they went from being STDs to STIs was that most would fall under STIs but not under STDs, so being STIs it encompasses more of them. He told us that there about 20 different types of infection, but we talked about the 7 most common ones out there today for people our age (15- 25). They were:
1. Chlamydia
2. Gonorrhea
3. Syphilis

Today in class we used the new juicer to see how it worked and to see what the juice would taste like, we juiced apples and the juice tasted like apple cider and surprisingly it was good, I am kind of nervous to see how everyone elses turns out though. Sarah did a Vitamin C presentation and Beth did a presentation on vitamin B3.

Today in class, Jim Carter from Underhill came to talk to us about donating organs. We learned about heart and heart rate, liver, kidneys, and dialysis. We learned about the TILT: Today I learned that........ We also learned about alcohol and cirrhosis on the liver. We also learned about the two different types of death: brain and cardiac. We found out that you only need 30% of one kidney to survive and some people may not have both, and you NEED a liver to survive. The liver is also the biggest organ in your body. We also talked about how long certain organs can be outside of the body:
Liver: 4hrs
Heart: 6hrs
Kidneys: 72hrs
Corneas: 14 days
We learned about cars and seat belts:
1964: Ford was the first car to have seat belts as a requirement, and they were only the lap ones.
1950's: Volvo was the firs European car to have seat belts.
1968: USA govt required that all cars mus have seat belts.
2001: Click it or ticket.
Neils Bjolan invented that chest strap of the seat belt. He also talked to use about his daughter, Andrea, who died in a car crash when she was 17 and how her family had her organs donated to people in need of transplants.

Today in class we continued on with our presentations.
Micah: Vitamin C. He didn't know what collagen was so he had to look it up online and found the definition to be: main protein of connective tissue in animals and the most abundant protein in mammals, 25% of the total protein content. We also had to look up whether or not Mountain Dew really causes sterility in men, don't worry, it doesn't.
Jen:Vitamin B-1
Josh: Vitamin B-2

Today we found out about our new assignment: The food pyramid. We were divided into 5 groups, I am in group #1, the Grains with Beth and Josh. We have to go onto the food pyramid website and answer specific questions about the group we were assigned. We also have to go on and complete a quick questionnaire that tells us specifically what we need to take in daily, food wise. Then we were to post the results into the My Projects section of our blogs.

Today in class we learned that we had to create two more accouts, flickr and del.icio.us. These are supposed to help us in links and bookmarking, which I don't get the point of why we have to do this. Then Mr. Cohun left and some of us started our vitamin presentations.
Sara E: Vitamin C
Zach W: Vertamin H
Luke C: Vitamin B-5
Beth C: Vitamin B-3
Jen M: Vitamin B-1
Me: Vitamin B-12
Overall they were really good, some may have needed speling corrections or more information but they all helped us understand the different types of Vitamins out there.

In class today we found out about our new assignments. Each of us has a vegetable, fruit and vitamin to research online. Then we learned about different kinds of juicers. We watched three different videos on juicer each with a different sales pitch. The first one that we watched was the Breville Juice Fountain Elite. The video that we watched next was on the Jack Lalanne Power Juicer. The last video was on the juicer guy. It was a funny sales video that didn't really explain what the juicers details were they were more interested in selling a hippo cup thingie.
9/14/07What is juicing and why would you want to have juicing be part of a healthy lifestyle?
Today in class we got a new assignment, and that was to answer the above question. To do this we had to use the links provided on the school blog. I discovered that the definition of juicing is the natural fluid, fluid content, or liquid part that can be extracted from a plant or one of its parts, esp. of a fruit: orange juice. . But, surprisingly, fruits arre not the only thing that can be juiced, there is also vegetables.

Today in class we learned how to set up our wiki accounts and out blogs. Then we went to the computer lab where we were supposed to put this knowledge into effect and create both accounts. There were problems with the wiki as I couldn't log into it for most of class, but eventually we were able to fix the problem and I could get on. The blog was a lot easier to do. There was a little hold up after it had been created as I had forgotten what username to use and was logging on wrong. But I was to figure out the problem but noticing someone else's account and was able to get on. I also learned to add links and a picture which I was then able to help someone else with.
